Measurements with tracer gases
Ascertaining air quality and testing of the ventilation concept
Criteria for air quality
The air change rate, the ratio of external volumetric flow to indoor air volume, is the parameter commonly used for air exchange. The age of the air, describing the length of time the air has remained in the room, and the ventilation efficiency, indicating the effectiveness of the ventilation system, compose further air quality criteria for the assessment of air circulation in a room.
Measurement methods
Air exchange parameters can be determined indirectly by means of indicator gas measurements, whereby a small amount of a tracer gas is injected into the room or building volume to be examined. The air exchange parameters can then be ascertained by the decline in tracer gas concentration caused by natural as well as mechanical ventilation.
