Mind the Gap: Perception vs Reality in Passive House Costs

Our up­com­ing iPHA will dis­cuss an im­port­ant yet of­ten un­der­dis­cussed top­ic: the cost of con­struct­ing en­ergy-ef­fi­cient build­ings. The event will fea­ture a com­bin­a­tion of present­a­tions from build­ing pro­fes­sion­als and an in­ter­act­ive roundtable dis­cus­sion, hos­ted by Car­oline Ashe Brady, Chair­per­son of the Pass­ive House As­so­ci­ation of Ire­land.

The event will fea­ture three speak­ers who will provide over­views of vari­ous build­ing pro­jects. James York from Col­lect­ive Ar­chi­tec­ture will present a 90-home, mid-mar­ket-rent de­vel­op­ment for the West Scot­land Hous­ing As­so­ci­ation. In ad­di­tion to the design and con­struc­tion ap­proach, he will provide a cap­it­al cost com­par­is­on to dis­cuss the pro­ject's fin­an­cial as­pects.

OCC Con­struc­tion’s John O’Con­nell will provide the audi­en­ce with in­sights in­to a 26-unit hous­ing scheme loc­ated in Ire­land, and built to a con­ven­tion­al/coun­cil spe­cif­ic­a­tion versus the Pass­ive House stand­ard. Be­sides dis­cuss­ing cost dif­fer­en­ces for spe­cif­ic build­ing fea­tures, he will aim to give the audi­en­ce an ac­cess­ible, real-pro­ject view of where ad­di­tion­al costs arise and why com­par­is­ons vary between de­vel­op­ments.

Ber­hold Kaufmann from the Pass­ive House In­sti­tu­te will ex­am­ine an ex­ample pro­ject from Ger­many and will ex­plain how the gen­er­al rise in con­struc­tion costs makes the premi­um for ef­fi­ciency meas­ures smal­ler and how the in­vest­ments in Pass­ive House meas­ures can fu­ture­proof a pro­ject for fur­ther price hikes, es­pe­cially when the re­new­able en­ergy is lower dur­ing nights and in winter.

The we­bin­ar will in­clude time for a roundtable dis­cus­sion, with a mix of ques­tions from the mod­er­at­or and the audi­en­ce.
